%X The study area is part of the basin of the Alto Rio Grande tributary of the Rio Paraná (Brasil), which at the beginning of the 1960s was built on the Furnas Hydroelectric in southern Minas Gerais. Traditionally the area was used for the cultivation of coffee, one of the largest producer the country. Given this scenario, this study aims to analyze the land use in the permanent preservation area (APP) shores in the southern portion of the Furnas reservoir, comprising the municipalities of Alfenas, Areado, Alterosa, Divisa Nova and Cabo Verde. To this end, we used digital processing of images from CBERS CCD sensor and control field, resulting in land-use map, highlighting the APP. Given the analysis performed is observed that the margins of Furnas reservoir, a high degree of change stemming from the activities agropastoral and pastore. Using the margins of the reservoir for recreation, the potential for sport fishing and the development of water sports are the factors that has led to an increase of inns, resorts and vacation homes along the lakeshore. These uses have brought numerous environmental problems such as erosion, siltation, imbalances in river ecosystems, water pollution, among others. The dynamics of intense change in vegetation cover highlights the conflicts between land use and environmental conservation on the shores of Furnas reservoir. This scenario makes it imperative to undertake studies to assist in planning, aiming at the sustainable use of water resources, both for their consumptive uses and non-consumptive.
